ReAgent’s Involvement with BloodhoundSSC The Worlds Fastest Car

December 18th, 1898. Gaston de Chasseloup-Laubat, a French race car driver steps into his Jeantaud electric car and sets the first recognised automobile land speed record. His top speed? 39mph (63.13 km/h). It’s bizarre to believe that at that time, this electric car was the fastest land vehicle in the world, and now we get frustrated on the road if we can’t reach 40mph due to traffic on the road.

Fast forward 99 years to October 15, 1997 in Black Rock Desert, USA and Andy D. Green OBE has just set a new record for the fastest lands peed automobile. Powered by a type of air-breathing jet engine called a turbofan, the ThrustSSC reached a top speed of 763.035mph (1227.986km/h) over a 1 mile stretch.  I suppose you could say that is a slight improvement over the French Jeantaud, back in 1898. The ThrustSSC became the first car to officially break the sound barrier. The Thrust Supersonic Car (ThrustSSC) was developed by Richard Noble, Glynne Bowsher, Ron Ayers and Jeremy Bliss.

Thrust SSC holds the World Land Speed Record, set on 15 October 1997, when it achieved a speed of 1,228 km/h (763 mph) and became the first car to officially break the sound barrier.

ReAgent and BloodhoundSSC

If you regularly follow our social media accounts then you may be aware that we have an extremely exciting association with the current land speed record development aiming to set the new record. BloodhoundSSC is the younger brother of the ThrustSSC, and aims to match or exceed 1000mph (1609 km/h). The new vehicle is being designed and developed by the same team who developed the ThrustSSC and its attempt to beat the land speed record is intended with a 33% speed increase from the previous car, the largest ever land speed record margin.

What we supplied

  • IBC’s of deionised water to test the Jaguar engine used in the car. The water has to be pure and be mineral-free to ensure it doesn’t corrode or contaminate parts of the engine
  • Hydrogen peroxide to be used for the passivation and conditioning of materials for the car
  • Standards are strict in the automotive industry, so our products had to be handled and packaged in accordance to industry guidelines

What Next?

Before the official record attempt takes place on the Hakskeen Pan in the Mier area of the Northern Cape, South Africa, BloodhoundSSC are giving fans a chance to visit the rocket engine powered car at the World Debut East Wintergarden, Canary Wharf, London on Thursday 24th September. So, if you want to see the worlds fastest car on it’s world debut then you need to head down to London on the 24th September.
