ReAgent installs fiber cable for improved network stability

As our workforce continues to grow, the demands on our infrastructure increase accordingly. We have recently taken steps to ensure that the increased activity on our servers doesn’t cause performance bottlenecks for our staff when using our systems. 

A necessary upgrade

In order to meet this increased demand, we had to take the step to enhance our network infrastructure by installing a fibre link to the warehouse furthest away from our servers.  Additional network points have been installed throughout the site, futureproofing our setup in preparation for the new VoIP telephone system that is due to be installed by the end of the year.

The first step to installing the new fibre cabling was to have our building surveyed to identify the most efficient method whilst ensuring compatibility with our current infrastructure. We have our own internal servers here at ReAgent, and with our high speed leased line we already have a reliable foundation to go with. However, network bottlenecks were occasionally witnessed by employees in the far warehouse as we had one Cat5 Ethernet cable linking to a switch feeding several computers which was not ideal. We had fairly strict requirements for the VoIP project – call reliability being the primary concern.  As calls will soon be routed via data packets rather than ISDN phone lines we wanted to ensure that the network can handle everything we throw at it.

Materials installed

Most of the site was already networked to a sufficient standard. We effectively replaced a single Ethernet cable linking our main cabinet to the far sub-cabinet with a new 8-core fibre link via a breakout box. The main cabinet has a fibre patch panel allowing us to further expand the internal fibre network if the need arises again in future. We also had additional network points installed at several locations throughout the site to support base stations for a series of DECT handsets, allowing key employees to stay contactable wherever they happen to be on the site.
