BLOODHOUND SSC: ReAgent Sponsors World’s Fastest Car

The BLOODHOUND Project aims to break the current Land Speed Record, by building a Car that can drive at speeds of above 1000 mph, powered by a hybrid rocket. Faster than the speed of sound, the BLOODHOUND SSC would be able to travel across four and a half football pitches in one second!

The current World Air Speed Record for low altitude is 994 mph, and the BLOODHOUND Project aims to exceed that speed on land. But is it even possible, how did it all begin, and what does ReAgent have to do with it?

What is the BLOODHOUND Project?

The BLOODHOUND Project is a global engineering adventure. It involves the strategic design of a Car; the BLOODHOUND SuperSonic Car (or BLOODHOUND SSC) and the execution of a world record attempt.

The BLOODHOUND SSC will attempt to beat the current Land Speed Record, by breaking scientific and engineering barriers and proving that we can continue to push limits. The BLOODHOUND SSC will have four wheels, weigh over 7 tonnes and boast a sleek body of around 14 metres long.

The Car is a mix of car and aircraft technology. The front half is a carbon fibre monocoque like a racing car, whilst the back half has a metallic framework and panels like an aircraft. The Car produces 135,000 horsepower, which is more than 6 times the power of all the Formula 1 cars on a starting grid combined!

The BLOODHOUND SSC will run on dry lake beds or salt flats. This eliminates the need for costly track redevelopment, as the venues flood regularly and renew themselves this way.

The idea for the BLOODHOUND Project was born when Paul Drayson (Minister for Defence Equipment and Support) wanted to generate a new iconic project to inspire young people to become engineers. The Ministry of Defence and the rest of the country were short of engineers, and this project would require experts in Engineering and other STEM subjects (Science, Technology and Maths).

Due to the exciting nature of the project, and the need to push boundaries of technology along the way, it is hoped that it will inspire a new generation of engineers.

Can the BLOODHOUND SSC Beat the Land Speed Record?

The BLOODHOUND Project is aiming to do what’s never been done before. So the question on many peoples’ minds is; is 1000 mph possible?

The project is still in development, but we may be closer to answering this question at the end of 2015, when the organisation, BLOODHOUND Programme Limited aims to do a so-called “slow” run of 800 mph. The actual record-breaking attempt will take place in 2016.

The speed of sound has been exceeded by a car before. ThrustSSC achieved a speed of 763 mph, breaking the previous record by 20%. BLOODHOUND SSC aims to top this record by a further 31%; a bold ambition.

However, it’s important to remember that we have always set speed barriers in our minds. In 1899, even 100 mph was deemed impossible. As technology has advanced, so has our ability to make even more impressive advancements.

Ron Ayers has his doubts. He states that there must be an ultimate speed limit, even for jet-powered cars. For this reason, there are significant differences made to the BLOODHOUND SSC, such as the jet + rocket combination.

The designers have also incorporated factors such as wheel design, the jet engine used and shape optimisation of the BLOODHOUND SSC. If the designers can pull off the new design, the BLOODHOUND SSC could be a game-changer.

The BLOODHOUND Project can be proud that it has actually already achieved a Guinness World Record when a BLOODHOUND SSC replica was built from K’NEX toy construction pieces. The structure holds the record for the World’s Largest K’NEX Structure. It is comprised of over 383,422 parts and stands at 3.874m high.

As a leading chemical supplier in the UK, ReAgent was approached by BLOODHOUND Programme Limited, when they required some chemicals from us.

We supplied (and will continue to supply) the BLOODHOUND Project with a range of chemicals which would be used to clean and prepare the rocket system components. One function of the chemicals will be to passivate the materials that the Car and engine are made from.

As our interest grew in the project, we opted to become an official product sponsor. This means that we help to run the programme and build the Car by supplying goods. In return, we will be invited to attend some of the exciting events run by the BLOODHOUND Project.
